In this video, we dive deep into the fascinating world of borrowed chords and modal interchange. These techniques can add a whole new dimension to your playing, bringing fresh and unexpected sounds to your music.
What You'll Learn:
Borrowed Chords: Understanding how to incorporate chords from parallel keys to add color and interest to your progressions.
Modal Interchange: Exploring the practice of using chords from different modes to enhance your harmonic palette.
To bring these concepts to life, we break down the Allman Brothers' classic song "Midnight Rider." This southern rock anthem is a perfect example of how borrowed chords and modal interchange can create an unforgettable chord progression and melody. We'll take you through the song step-by-step, highlighting the use of these techniques and showing you how to apply them in your own playing.

I'm slow, I know. But, Charlie, I'm beginning to understand 40+ years of playing don't mean beans if you don't understand the why's and inter-workings of that fretboard! I've made a resolution to stop and slow down and figure this guitar out and YOU"RE the key to help me! And I've watched them all. You helped me do some cranial-rectumitis and I'll be riding along with you til the job is done.

You're EXACTLY CORRECT: Pracrice how you want to play! That's true in every single field: military, emergency management, music, sports, you name it. I don't understand why other ppl have so much trouble. I'm certainly not a pro, but i can jam pretty good. When I'm practicing, i might create a chord progression on the looper and jam to it. I just make up riffs. I'll just start, create a "theme" or motif, and then gradually expand on it with different variations. Sometimes i do "call and response." But i NEVER play scales! I play musical riffs. It's easy! Just start out with 4 notes: start with i note below the root, and 2 notes above (include the root note). Then go from there. As you gain more experience, you can come up with more complicated riffs. But, always, always, always create a motif to build on. Don't be afraid to try new things! You're practicing by yourself, not putting on a concert. Try varying the motif in different ways. When something sounds good, you'll know it! Finally, play like you mean it. With confidence, conviction. If you play tentatively, none of it will sound good (to you or anyone else). But right now, you're just playing for yourself, experimenting. So don't be afraid. Be bold! Vary the intensity of the different notes. (Some hard, some soft). Whatever it takes. Good luck! 👌 👍

Charlie, each one of your videos is just so helpful to my guitar playing. Each one seems either build on or reinforce the concepts of earlier lessons and adds "that missing piece" of knowledge that helps me apply all the hours spent learning scales and theory. I'm saying to myself more and more with each lesson "oh, is that how that's done". I can't believe my luck that I have found such an incredible resource and teacher. I've thanked you before and I gratefully do so again.

There's this guy with hand tattoos, a beard anda football jersey that gets on an advertisement saying that there is one thing that determines whether a beginner guitar player will succeed or fail. His self satisfied gaze is pretty annoying. What is worse though is that he says there is one thing with that self satisfied air. He is straight up wrong. There is not one thing that will determine whether you succeed or fail. In fact, unless you don't play at all, you cannot possibly fail. So Fuk him and play your guitar with no trippin. Have fun. Play hard and often.

Respect to you man. But nah CAGED is useful. You need a way to get a toehold on the fretboard when you're a beginner. It isn't as simple as "learn music theory then apply it to the fretboard." An aspiring guitarist could stay stuck into their 40s trying to figure out how to do the "apply it" part. CAGED is just training wheels that provide a beginner's roadmap. Eventually you know your way around well enough and the trainers come off. My first woodwind classes were taught with Essential Elements. Guess when I last thought about Essential Elements.

Great question!! We’re just adding other notes from the major scale that sit adjacent to notes of the triad. So if the triad is made up of the 1, 3, and 5 of the scale…we can add the 2 or the 4 to make it sound even more musical

I fixed the noodling thing a couple years ago: realized that whenever I sit down and play there's a moment where there's this epic shit coming out, whether on guitar or piano, so now I rarely play without hitting record in the DAW first. I mean It's not like we need to save on tape, so it can run in the background while I explore some scale and see what happens. Then I just delete the silence, listen through and delete the trash, and what's left is enough generally for a couple songs which I didn't know I was writing. Then just do a pass through with a midi drum kit and stuff takes shape, track by track. It's like speed-writing by improvisation.

@@CharlieLongGuitar it's done something unexpected too, it expanded my definition of what you can make into a song, and brought me back to figuring out the theory *after the inspiration occurs and gets recorded, which is nice because that can box a person in, sticking to a specific key.
